In spring 2009, Joe Hall and
the Louisiana Cane Cutters released Live at Nunu’s, recorded
at Nunu’s Nightlife in Arnaudville, a dance hall, café, and cultural
center all in one location.
The band just played, and
the crowd danced and enjoyed. There was no rehearsal, not even a
planned set, so what you hear is just good music and good times like
it happens every Saturday night in Southwest Louisiana.
The CD has 15 cuts of
Creole, Zydeco, and Cajun music beginning with “Fifi Poncho,”
followed by Canray Fontenot’s “Dixieland” and Dewey Balfa’s “La
Valse Criminelle.” The next three selections cover Clifton
Chenier’s versions of “Johnny Can’t Dance” and “Baby Please Don’t
Go” and his “Zydeco Cha Cha.” The band also plays Amédé
Ardoin’s “La
danse de la
misère”
and Nathan Abshire’s “Pine Grove Blues” and “French Two-Step.”
Traditional songs include
“Nonc Eddy,” “Jolie Blonde,” “Allons
à
Lafayette,” and “J’étais au bal.” Joe offers his own instrumental,
“Nunu’s Breakdown.”
Band members include Jay
Miller on drums; Daniel Sanda on electric guitar and backup vocals;
David Trahan on acoustic guitar; Jo Vidrine on bass guitar; Blake
Miller on fiddle; and special guest, Mitch Reed on fiddle.
Reed, who is a member of BeauSoleil, has recorded Creole music with
Joe Hall on earlier CDs.
There very few bands around
any longer that perform Creole music with fiddles, so it is a rare
and special treat to listen to two top fiddlers teamed with a great
accordion player like Joe Hall. Their version of "Pine Grove Blues"
alone is worth the price of the CD.
The CD was released by Frugé
